Senior Policy Counsel
Jeanne Smoot is the Senior Policy Counsel at the Tahirih Justice Center. For nearly 15 years, Ms. Smoot has fought to protect immigrant women and girls from violence, including by defending and expanding special protections in federal law. Since 2015, Ms. Smoot has led a national campaign to enact legal and policy changes to end forced and child marriage in the U.S. She has nationally-recognized expertise on how states' current minimum marriage age laws put children at risk, and she helped enact historic bipartisan reforms in VA (2016) and TX (2017) that limit marriage to legal adults. A frequent media spokeswoman, Ms. Smoot is now driving or advising similar legislative campaigns in several other states.
