In 1990, George H. W. Bush declared November as Native American Heritage Month. This month is dedicated to celebrating the rich history, culture, and traditions of Indigenous peoples across the country.

Many Native American advocates have been using the spotlight of Native American Heritage Month to shed light on the issues and struggles that Native American communities face nationwide. Nicole Matthews, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Indian Women’s Sexual Assault Coalition, is one such advocate.

Matthews began working with the coalition over 18 years ago and continues to bring about awareness of domestic violence in tribal communities throughout the region. Having experienced sexual assault directly, and working with women who have had similar experiences, Matthew’s work with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors within Indigenous populations is extremely personal.
