Intimate-partner domestic violence homicides are on the rise in many cities around the country since the COVID-19 outbreak began. In an effort to curb the rise in this tragic loss of life, some cities are launching domestic violence awareness campaigns aimed at the upcoming holidays.
In Memphis, TN, there have been 17 intimate-partner domestic violence homicides during the pandemic, which is the same number as the entire year of 2019. With the murder rate up to 275 total homicides thus far this year, compared to 191 in all of 2019, the Family Safety Center of Memphis and the Memphis Police Department are coming together to stop the growing numbers.
By launching the city’s annual “Hope for the Holidays” domestic violence awareness campaign, city officials hope to halt the surge in domestic violence cases that have been increasing since social distancing and self-quarantining began. Click here to read more
