At CCAW, we pride ourselves on the caliber of expert speakers we bring to our attendees each year. Every session is carefully vetted to ensure it delivers the depth of knowledge, practical insight, and professionalism our audience expects. We can list more than 250 workshops with titles designed to inform and engage—but ultimately, the value comes from the person leading the room. Who is teaching? Who is inspiring the change‑makers who attend CCAW? We take great pride in the exceptional speakers who join us, and we are committed to delivering the highest level of training possible.
One of our distinguished returning speakers is Jordyn Lawson, Chief Residential Officer at Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support. Ms. Lawson is a licensed clinician and licensed professional counselor supervisor who oversees both the emergency shelter and Annie’s House transitional living program. These programs offer a comprehensive range of services, including a 24-hour hotline and text line, onsite school for grades K–7, onsite daycare and children’s services, advocacy and counseling services, and Occupational Therapy. Before stepping into her current role, Ms. Lawson served as assistant clinical director, providing individual and group therapy to women and children for over eight years. Altogether, she brings more than 16 years of experience in domestic violence and trauma recovery.
One of Ms. Lawson’s cornerstone sessions at CCAW, presented with Genesis‘ Chief Clinical Officer, Ruth Guerreiro, is How to Effectively Communicate with Survivors. In this workshop, Ms. Lawson explores common reactions from victims and how those reactions, influenced by their stage in the Stages of Change model, may impact their engagement in investigations, prosecutions, or therapeutic processes. After attending this course, a detective from a large metro-area Sheriff’s Office shared that their team was incorporating its concepts into in‑service training for patrol deputies. The detective told Ms. Lawson that among the many trainings they had attended over the years, hers offered one of the clearest explanations of survivor stages and how best to engage.
*How to Effectively Communicate with Survivors will be presented again this year at CCAW*
Ms. Lawson is also known for the workshop, Why Shelters Won’t Stop Domestic Violence, which discusses the barriers to victims seeking safety from an abusive relationship and questions whether emergency shelter services should be the only go-to recommendation for victims. A Sexual Assault Advocate from a small Texas city attended this session and returned to her agency with new perspectives on shelter practices, rule changes worth considering, and strategies which were also reinforced in Ms. Lawson’s additional session entitled, Building on the Basics: Strategies for Domestic Violence.
*Why Shelters Won’t Stop Domestic Violence will be presented again this year at CCAW under the title, Why Shelter Can’t Fix It: How to Effectively Refer To & Utilize Shelter Services*
When you’re choosing what to bring back to your community and implement for meaningful change, it helps to learn from a speaker who inspires action. Jordyn Lawson is one of those speakers. With countless attendees sharing how her sessions have shaped their work, we ensure she returns each year with updated, relevant, and impactful content.
