October marks Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Month, a time to honor survivors, raise awareness, and recommit ourselves to ending abuse. At the Conference on Crimes Against Women (CCAW), this cause is deeply personal. Our parent organization, Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, has been a beacon of hope for thousands of women and children experiencing domestic violence.
Since opening its doors in 1985, Genesis has remained steadfast in its mission: to remove every barrier a woman may face on her journey to healing. Based in Dallas, Texas, Genesis provides emergency shelter, counseling, occupational therapy, legal advocacy, and more all designed to support survivors holistically. Genesis goes beyond shelter by offering residential and non-residential services, hosting fundraisers and volunteer opportunities, and operating a Benefit Thrift Store where clients shop free of charge. Public purchases directly fund Genesis programs, making every transaction a step toward healing.
Genesis and CCAW share a visionary leader, Jan Langbein, whose tireless advocacy has shaped both organizations. After witnessing the staggering statistics of those served by Genesis, Jan recognized the urgent need for systemic change. She founded CCAW designed to not only proactively address domestic violence but all forms of gender-based violence by educating professionals, empowering communities, and amplifying survivor voices.
